After trying one of those "proper jobs" (in advertising) for almost a decade, I decided that it would be far more stable and lucrative to become a comedian and actor. So I started doing stand up in 2008, gigging around the UK and writing shows for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Since then, I've been one half of double act Leads & Stern and acted in plays and short films.
As well as performing and writing comedy, I've been teaching new comics at Soho Theatre since 2012. I like to create a safe and supportive space for people to learn how to write and perform stand up, develop their stage persona and find out about how to progress in the comedy industry. Here's what past participants think.
Teaching has led me to work with some brilliant emerging acts, such as Jack Rooke ('Good Grief') and Bimini Bon-Boulash.('RuPaul's Drag Race UK').
Each term I teach at Soho Theatre, I learn more and more about the art of stand up, through the participants I work with. I have developed my teaching style and courses over the years and started Above Your Nerve, to continue nurturing emerging artists. The company is dedicated to finding and promoting new voices from underrepresented groups, so that the comedy industry becomes more reflective of the communities and world we live in.
As a director, I look to collaborate with an artist, to bring out the best in them and their work. My aim is to help facilitate their vision, evolve their material and polish their performance.
Currently, I am working with Katie Norris, on her show 'Farm Fatale'. Recently, I joined the creative team at Shotgun Carousel, on 'The Grotteaux'.
Or things people have written about things I've written (and how I've said them)
“Calm, collected and funny…”
[ThreeWeeks]
“Think Morecambe and Wise meets Smack the Pony…”
[Funny Women]
“Gemma Leader is impressive. Her material is good, as is her timing . . . she’s in panel show territory…”
